The weather turned favourable on Tuesday evening which brought some snow to the higher regions. Tourists were thrilled to see the snowfall, while farmers and fruit growers are happy as the rain and snow have broken a long-prevailing dry spell. Hoteliers and travel agents believe that snowfall will boost tourism in the state. According to Met office, more snowfall is expected in the next 48 hours. However, according to weather portal AccuWeather, rains and snowfall may continue in the first week of February. So, those who wish to see fresh snowfall, this is the right time to head to the hills. The parts of Himachal have received another spell of snow while the entire Lahaul valley has received heavy snowfall and the administration has ordered to close the schools for two days. With some areas receiving heavy snow and blankets of snow forming several layers, the Himachal disaster management authority has warned about avalanches in districts of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti. Both the district administrations have asked people to stay alert. While higher regions are receiving fresh snow, the lower areas are lashed by rain. Lahaul-Spiti district headquarter Keylong has received 60cm snow since Sunday evening. Koksar has received over 75cm snow. Solang, which was covered with nearly 75cm snow, has received 15cm more snow on Monday. Kalpa in Kinnaur also received 15cm more snow. Manali town received some traces of snow in the evening but snowfall had restarted in the late evening. The residents of Shimla city received some relief from slippery roads and pathways due to the rain but upper parts of the district received some snow. The conditions are worst in Lahaul valley where all roads are blocked and electricity and phone networks have been crippled by snow. The residents are hearing the roaring sound of the movement of snow avalanches but nobody can see them in almost no visibility. Keylong sub-divisional magistrate Amar Negi said the valley has experienced heavy snowfall since Sunday and schools have been closed for the next two days. “All roads are blocked and power supply is affected partially. The accumulation of blanket of snow on old hard snow has increased the chances of avalanches. We have alerted residents to take extra precaution,” he said. Manali recorded minimum temperature of 3.6 degrees C in last 4 hours. The maximum day temperature was recorded at 16.4 degrees C. There was no possibility of snowfall at such high temperature. Despite this the town and nearby places are experiencing snowfall. Lower areas including Kullu and Bhuntar towns are witnessing thundershowers. Till late evening, Manali town had received 10cm of fresh snow. Solang valley received over 15cm of snow. High mountain peaks including Rohtang pass too are receiving heavy snow since afternoon. Manali-Rohtang-Leh highway has been blocked for traffic following heavy snowfall in mid and high hills of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts of Himachal and a fresh wave of cold has gripped the entire state on Thursday. Rohtang pass, 51km from here, is covered under 60cm of fresh snow while Baralacha pass in Lahaul valley has received more than 75cm fresh snow. Manali-Spiti road has also blocked after 45cm snowfall on Kunzum pass. Jalori pass on Kullu-Anni highway has also received some snow. Given the safety of the tourists, Manali police restricted movement of tourists to Kothi, 13km from here, till 12pm. Later when snowfall stopped, tourists were allowed to go till Gulaba, 19km from here. Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Beer Singh Thakur said vehicular traffic on Keylong-Leh highway has come to a complete halt after heavy snowfall. “The entire valley is getting intermittent snowfall. We are able to handle all type of situations arising due to heavy snowfall,” he said. While district headquarters Keylong received some overnight snow, Koksar, Darcha, Sissu, Telangbe and dozens of villages of valley are below more than 10cm thick blanket of snow. High hills of Himachal, including Lahaul valley, are getting heavy snowfall on Thursday. Keylong in Lahaul has received 5cm snow; fresh snow accumulation at Gulaba has reached nearly 10cm while it is over 20cm on Rohtang pass. Jalori pass on Kullu-Shimla bypass is also experiencing snowfall while almost all hills in Chamba, Kullu, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Kangra with height more than 12,000 are receiving heavy snowfall since Thursday morning. The active western disturbances are causing rain in mid and low hills of the state. The mercury has plunged in all parts of Himachal and its freezing in high altitude areas. Border Roads Organization (BRO) has lost its predetermined target of April 15 to open Rohtang for vehicular traffic as snowfall has again blocked a large portion of highway which was recently opened. “We had opened 32km Manali-Marhi highway from south of Rohtang and from north side it was 5km beyond Koksar. Frequent snowfall is not allowing us to work continuously and now we’ll have to remove snow from Gulaba (26km) and Koksar one more time,” BRO commander Colonel Yogesh Nair said. High altitude lakes and water streams in Himachal Pradesh have started to freeze as temperature is dipping down drastically. The minimum temperature on hills higher than 13,000 feet has been below the freezing point. Situated at height of 16,000 feet, Suraj Tal lake at Sarchu and Chander Tal lake at a height of 14,100 feet in Spiti, have been freezing partially during night times. Most of the water bodies and streams on Baralacha-la have frozen completely. Dry atmosphere and low pressure have brought down the night temperature below freezing point here. According to meteorological department Shimla, temperature in the state is expected to decrease now onwards. Shimla meteorological department director Manmohan Singh said the temperature on high altitude regions was falling rapidly but low altitude areas of the state were still suffering from scorching heat. “District headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti at Keylong (11,000ft) is shivering at 7 degree Celsius, while Una is burning at 33 degree Celsius, 5 degrees more than usual temperature for this time of season,” he said. Kullu on Monday recorded minimum temperature of 16 degree Celsius, while it was 20.2 degree Celsius in Mandi. Keylong was the coldest at 7.1 degree Celsius followed by Kalpa (Kinnaur) at 8.5. Shimla, Dharamshala, Nahan, Una and Manali recorded minimum temperatures of 13.4, 14.1, 15.9, 20 and 10.2 degrees Celsius respectively. With maximum temperature of 33.2 degree Celsius, Una was the hottest region in state. Effect of cold is being witnessed in rivers, streams and other water sources whose water level has sharply decreased as melting speed of glaciers is decreased. Even the snow fed sources of drinking water in Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur and other hilly districts have affected a lot.
