Is it safe to travel manali at this time of heavy snowfall .
The Himalayan
December 19, 2020
Yes, if you want to see the wonder of nature -- the snowfall -- then this is the right time. There is no prediction for snowfall in the next few days. In case of snowfall, you can keep yourself safe by not venturing close to avalanche-prone areas and driving in the day time only. Don't drive beyond Manali town after or during snowfall and hire a local taxi instead. Follow traffic rules and adopt safe winter (snow) driving habits. If travelling in taxi, don't force driver to drive on deep snow and go to isolated areas.

Atal tunnel is closed for tourists. As there is chance of snowall in the next few days, it will not open for few more days. However, road to Keylong is open via the tunnel. You need to book a hotel in Lahaul valley so that hotel management could arrange for your transfer from Solang (Manali) to Lahaul. Only 4X4 vehicles are allowed to run in Lahaul (and tunnel) after obtaining prior permission from Lahaul-Spiti administration. Your hotel can arrange it for you. These days tourists are being allowed only till Solang valley. In Lahaul, if you get permission, the road is open till Darcha and even beyond Udaipur.

Atal tunnel is still closed for tourists. Lahaul-Spiti administration has issued notification that tourists can be allowed to tunnel and Lahaul valley but Kullu administration is still stopping tourists at Solang. Hopefully, tourists will be allowed in a few days. Will keep you updated.

Is it safe to go to Keylong via Atal Tunnel? Planning for it around March first week. Please reply.
The Himalayan
February 1, 2021
Travelling Lahaul valley in winter season will always be a risky affair due to chances of avalanches, slippery road surface due to black ice, sudden change in weather, road closure following snowfall. However, travel can be safe if local travel guidelines being issued time to time are followed. Travel only in 4X4 vehicle. Travel only in day time (between 10 AM and 5 PM). Don't dare to drive yourself. Hire local taxi. You will be needing a permission from Lahaul administration. You need to have an advance booking in hotel.

I was planning for trip in March first week. Is it possible to go to Keylong via Atal Tunnel?
The Himalayan
February 1, 2021
It's totally weather-dependent. You can visit Keylong if road will remain open. Administration can close traffic movement in case of snowfall or in case of avalanche threats. Nobody can predict road status in advance.

March 4, 2021
Hi, there is snowfall warning on March 6 and 7. In such cases, tourist movement can be restricted to Solang valley only. Otherwise you can go and stay overnight at Keylong or Jispa, provided that you have advance hotel booking and permission (from Lahaul administration) to enter the valley. You can ask the hotel to make all arrangements for you.

We are planning to visit Manali on 11th March. Can we go upto Sissu? Should we stay for a night in Sissu or a day trip from Manali will be advisable?
The Himalayan
March 10, 2021
Atal tunnel is open for tourists. In case of snowfall on 11 and 12 March, as predicted by met office, can force authorities to close the Solang-Atal tunnel road for tourists. You can easily go till Sissu and return back on the same day. Otherwise, if you wish to spend enough time there, you should book the hotel in advance as police won't allow you to go beyond Solang in case of inclement weather condition until you have advance booking voucher and prior permission from Lahaul administraton. The hotel will help you get permission. You may have to travel in 4X4 vehicle if there is snow/snowfall.

Planning to visit Manali by Road from Shimla on 24th March 2021. How will be weather to ride? Whether there will be snowfall and rain? Can we able to visit Atal Tunnel? How far Atal Tunnel from Manali?
The Himalayan
March 10, 2021
Atal tunnel is open these days but authorities can close it anytime following snowfall or avalanche threats without prior notice. We can't predict weather for March 24th. Even we can't predict whether you will be able to see snow or snowfall at Atal tunnel area. However, there is enough snow these days. Riding bikes to snowy areas in March is not advisable.

We are planning to cross Atal Tunnel in Tata Safari (2021 version) on 9th March. We also applied for ePass online from governement website and got approved but got concern after going through your post which says only 4X4 is allowed after solang Valley. I did clearly mentioned while applying for pass that my car is LMV (2 wheel drive). We have looked for homestay in Darcha, do you think we can travel till there in terms of road conditions. Also if you think if the local check post will allow us to travel in our front wheel drive car. Thanks in advance for your kind advice.

Yes. DC has issued the travel advisory yesterday. However, if weather remains favourable and there is no ice on road, the cops on duty may let the tourists with hotel booking go upto a certain distance. But, if they feel it's not safe, they will never allow. For more details, read the second half of this post….

Hi, just a question: is it possible to cross the tunnel with a Bicycle?? I will be in Ladakh next February 2022 but the Rothang La Pass is closed so I need to cycle the tunnel. Is it possible? Thanks
The Himalayan
January 4, 2023
You need to do a lot of research before attempting this bicycle tour as you have been misinformed that you can ride bike on Leh-Manali road via Atal tunnel in February. The road will be completely blocked following snowfall. There is no way to reach the tunnel from Leh in February.
January 5, 2023
Would you suggest 2-3d stay in Jispa or Keylong during January? Any chances of being stuck for greater than a day?
The Himalayan
January 11, 2023
You can stay at Keylong. Contact local hoteliers or preferably homestay owners. You need a 4X4 vehicle to reach there from Manali. In case of snowfall (it's snowing today also), you can stuck for 2-3 days or even for a week. You need to be prepared.
