The snowfall is expected to continue in the next 24 hours as the met office has issued a yellow alert for Wednesday. Higher areas of Kullu-Manali, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Shimla and Mandi districts are receiving fresh snow. Tourists are enjoying snowfall and the cold weather of Himachal. A large number of tourists are enjoying snowfall in Manali. Entire Lahaul valley has worn a white mantle. Solang valley and Kothi have received over 10cm snow on Tuesday. Over 30cm of snow has accumulated at Gulaba and Marhi while over 60cm of thick blanket has covered Rohtang pass. South portal of Atal tunnel has received 15cm snow. Nehru Kund and Manali town also witnessed some snowflakes. Jalori pass, Kunzum pass, Baralacha pass and surrounding areas are also receiving more snow. Parts of Himachal including Rohtang pass and Lahaul valley witnessed the first snowfall of the season on Sunday night that resulted in plunging of the mercury to minus 1 degree Celsius at Keylong. The high altitude peaks of Himachal including Rohtang, Kunzum, Baralacha, parts of Pir Panjal and Dhauldadhar mountain ranges received light snow. Keylong, Jispa and Darcha in Lahaul were covered with a thin sheet of snow that melted away in few minutes on Monday morning. The peaks around Lahaul and Manali were covered with a fresh white blanket on Monday morning. However, the snow disappeared soon after the sunrise. Manali also experienced some drizzling after a gap of two months. With this, the temperature in mid and high hills has dropped suddenly. Night temperature in many places has dropped below the freezing point. Keylong, district headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti district, recorded the lowest temperature of minus 1 degrees C, the lowest of the season. Kalpa and Manali recorded minimum temperature of 2.7 and 4.2 degrees C. Minimum temperature of Shimla was recorded at 11.1 degrees C. According to Shimla meteorological centre, the minimum temperature in the state decreased by 1 to 2 degrees C in the last 24 hours and overall minimum temperature of Himachal was also 1 to 2 degrees C below the normal for this time of the season. However, the weatherman has predicted dry weather conditions in the next seven days. A large number of tourists on Monday morning rushed to Lahaul and Rohtang pass to see the fresh snow. Heavy snowfall in parts of Kullu-Manali, Lahaul-Spiti and Mandi districts left traffic interrupted in many major roads while nearly 200 tourists stranded near Manali on Thursday. Hundreds of tourists had reached Gulaba and Kothi to see snowfall on Thursday morning. As it was snowing fast, tourists were asked to descend down to Kothi. Ignoring warning, many tourists stayed below Gulaba. Some tourists walked along the highway towards Gulaba. Later vehicles started slipping on the road and they got stranded. After getting news about tourists getting stranded, local administration, police and rescue volunteers rushed to Gulaba to carry out relief operation. All tourists were brought back to Manali by late evening. Manali sub-divisional magistrate Raman Gharsangi said tourists were not allowed to go beyond Gulaba on Thursday but some tourists were reported to have stranded below Gulaba. “The road had become very slippery. The tourists were brought to safe place with help of police, taxi union and other volunteers. Situation is under control,” he said. Solang valley and Kothi near Manali have experienced season’s first snowfall. Both places have received nearly 10cm of snow. Entire Lahaul valley is also covered with a thin layer of white blanket. Jalori pass in Kullu district that connects Anni and Nirmand sub-divisions with the headquarters has also witnessed season’s first snowfall, blocking the highway. As the administration is allowing tourist vehicles to ply the Manali-Rohtang highway in the daytime, hundreds of tourists have made a beeline to Rohtang pass to enjoy the fresh snow. Rohtang is covered with 10 to 20cm of powder snow which will last for few more weeks. Earlier this month administration had stopped tourist movement to Rohtang pass after some vehicles had stranded in snowfall. The Manali administration is now allowing tourist vehicles to go to snow point at Rohtang pass in day time. But the tourists need to leave Rohtang for Manali in the afternoon before icing of the road in the evening time. A large number of tourists are thronging Rohtang every day. “We were given a surprise in the form of fresh snow at Rohtang pass. This was one of the best surprises we ever received,” a tourist from West Bengal Deepak Ojha said. He added that they had booked the tour to Himachal a long back and had not expected to see snow in Manali in October. “We were surprised to see the whole area covered with white blanket. We had a lot of fun all the day.” Another tourist from Delhi, Amit Rathore, said he and his wife planned trip to Manali after hearing news about snowfall at Rohtang pass. “This is our second trip to Manali. Last time we could not see snow. We left Delhi for Manali on Sunday morning and visited Rohtang on Monday. It was an amazing experience. After witnessing a sudden surge in tourist footfall that left both hotels and roads choked in Manali last week, the hoteliers on Thursday said hotel occupancy has dropped to 60-70 per cent while traffic congestion too has finished in the tourist town. The long-weekend last week took toll on the infrastructure of Manali. As the maddening crowd and multiple traffic jams for hours that irked tourists have ended, the hoteliers said they are inviting tourists to Manali to enjoy cold and calm environment. The taxi fares too have come down to half of what was being charged until few days back. They said if tourists want to see the miracle of nature in the form of snowfall in mid-June, this is the right time to visit Manali. Manali Hoteliers’ Association president Anup Thakur said 30 to 40 per cent of the rooms in most hotels are empty. “We confess that tourists had to face some problems like traffic jams, non-availability of rooms, high taxi fare and room tariff. We assure tourists that things have improved now. The problem of traffic jams has almost gone due to better traffic management and spreading of tourist vehicles to other tourists attractions of the district like Hamta, Jana, Naggar and Manikaran,” he said. He added that rooms are easily available in hotels at reasonable price and buses from Delhi and Chandigarh are reaching Manali on time. “As many tourists are visiting Lahaul and Rohtang together, taxis for Rohtang pass are easily available. The taxi operators of Manali are charging fair price. The traffic at some points is moving very slow due to road construction works but we have got rid of hour-long jams starting from Kullu,” he added. Till last reports, Rohtang pass received 10 cm fresh snow while Kugti jot in Chamba, Reo Pargil, Kinner-Kailash ranges in Kinnaur, Deo Tibba, Hanuman Tibba and Seven Sister ranges in Kullu received 10 to 30 cm fresh snow and the snowfall was still continued. Snowfall on peaks above 12,000 feet and moderate rain on lower areas have caused sharp drop in temperature. More than 15 thousands tourists on Wednesday thronged Rohtang top to witness the fresh snowfall and jammed the traffic for over four hours. Most of the tourists reached here before 5 am to avoid traffic jams but with desire to see snow all reached Rohtang early morning and jammed the traffic. “I cannot believe that we saw real fresh snowfall at Rohtang and that’s too in June when entire country is fainted with scorching heat,” a tourist from New Delhi, Balbir Kapoor, said. Tourism industry of the state with snow capped mountains and cool weather is hoping for good time in coming days. According to meteorological office Shimla director Manmohan Singh, the similar weather condition would remain in the state for five more days. “High altitude hills would experience mild snow while mid and lower hills would receive rain with thundershowers,” he said.

Followed by heavy snowfall since Sunday morning, the Lahaul-Spiti district administration has issued alert for avalanches and advised residents to stay indoors till favourable weather condition. District headquarter Keylong has recorded 75cm fresh snowfall since last 36 hours. Blizzards and cold wave have gripped the entire valley. Accumulation of snow is even high on high altitude regions around the valley. To cope with the situation, administration has advised residents to stay inside their house. “It is dangerous for residents to venture into the isolated areas where risk of avalanches is very high,” Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Rajeev Shankar told Discover Kullu Manali adding that staying indoors is advisable in such inclement weather conditions. “We have marked the avalanche prone areas and keeping an eye on the activities in valley.” Udaipur and Koksar recorded 45cm and 80cm snowfall respectively. Keylong on Monday recorded minimum temperature of minus 2.9 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature was 4.6 degrees Celsius. Local meteorological department has forecast of light snowfall only on high altitude peaks on Tuesday.

Manali: Rohtang pass, the gateway to Lahaul-Spiti district and a famous summer destination, has received 15 cm fresh snow on Sunday. The all day rainfall in mid hills and snowfall on high hills has given rise to cold in Manali. It was quite tough time for tourists who had come here with some light clothes. Surprisingly, the warm clothes in market are still selling like hotcakes. Some of the tourists who successfully reached Rahni Nullah witnessed the wonder of nature. Fresh snowflakes thrilled them like never before. The snowfall lasted for over four hours. Ranhi Nullah, around 1,000 feet below Rohtang, experienced 4 cm of snow. The sudden variation in weather has badly affected the snow clearance operation on Manali-Leh highway. According to a BRO official, the work was on even in the blizzard but it definitely affected the operation which is close an end. “We and Rohtang are habitual of eating fresh snow throughout the year,” second-in-command, major Vikram Singh said.
