Tourists were thrilled to see the snowfall, while farmers and fruit growers are happy as the rain and snow have broken a long-prevailing dry spell. Hoteliers and travel agents believe that snowfall will boost tourism in the state. According to Met office, more snowfall is expected in the next 48 hours. However, according to weather portal AccuWeather, rains and snowfall may continue in the first week of February. So, those who wish to see fresh snowfall, this is the right time to head to the hills. Temperature across Himachal has dipped as the upper reaches of Himachal continued to receive more snow on Tuesday. The snowfall is expected to continue in the next 24 hours as the met office has issued a yellow alert for Wednesday. Higher areas of Kullu-Manali, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Shimla and Mandi districts are receiving fresh snow. Tourists are enjoying snowfall and the cold weather of Himachal. A large number of tourists are enjoying snowfall in Manali. Entire Lahaul valley has worn a white mantle. Solang valley and Kothi have received over 10cm snow on Tuesday. Over 30cm of snow has accumulated at Gulaba and Marhi while over 60cm of thick blanket has covered Rohtang pass. South portal of Atal tunnel has received 15cm snow. With some areas receiving heavy snow and blankets of snow forming several layers, the Himachal disaster management authority has warned about avalanches in districts of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti. Both the district administrations have asked people to stay alert. While higher regions are receiving fresh snow, the lower areas are lashed by rain. Lahaul-Spiti district headquarter Keylong has received 60cm snow since Sunday evening. Koksar has received over 75cm snow. Solang, which was covered with nearly 75cm snow, has received 15cm more snow on Monday. Kalpa in Kinnaur also received 15cm more snow. Manali town received some traces of snow in the evening but snowfall had restarted in the late evening. The residents of Shimla city received some relief from slippery roads and pathways due to the rain but upper parts of the district received some snow. The conditions are worst in Lahaul valley where all roads are blocked and electricity and phone networks have been crippled by snow. The residents are hearing the roaring sound of the movement of snow avalanches but nobody can see them in almost no visibility. Keylong sub-divisional magistrate Amar Negi said the valley has experienced heavy snowfall since Sunday and schools have been closed for the next two days. “All roads are blocked and power supply is affected partially. The accumulation of blanket of snow on old hard snow has increased the chances of avalanches. We have alerted residents to take extra precaution,” he said. The parts of Himachal on Friday were lashed by rain and hailstorms while high hills including Rohtang pass received fresh snow, bringing back winter-like conditions as mercury dipped sharply. Rohtang pass, which is covered with 20 to 30ft of snow, received 6cm more snow. The peaks around Manali, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba are getting more snow. The middle and lower hills of the state are receiving rain since Friday early morning. The temperature at many places has dipped abnormally. The minimum temperature of the state is 2 to 3 degrees C below and maximum temperature is 6 to 7 degrees C below the normal temperature during this time of the season. At 5.2 degrees C, Keylong recorded lowest night temperature in the state while the day temperature was 16 degrees C. Kalpa (6.9), Manali (7.6), Dalhousie (10.9), Shimla (12.2) and Dharamshala (16) also saw sharp fall in temperature. The maximum day temperature at these stations was 19, 19, 17.9, 22 and 23.8 degrees C respectively. The drop in both day and night temperatures have forced residents of Manali, Lahaul-Spiti, Bharmour, Kinnaur and higher regions of the state to wear heavy woollens. On Friday, people had to switch on their room heaters. According to meteorological centre, Shimla, the temperature in state has decreased by 2 to 7 degrees C in last 24 hours. A crystal clear sky on Thursday, a day after heavy snowfall in the state, brought with it coldest morning of the season and froze everything that came in contact with the air. Temperature suddenly plummeted many notches below the freezing point freezing every source of water including drinking water lines. Manali recorded spine chilling night at -7.4 degrees Celsius and district administration has announced to close all the schools till Sunday. Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti district recorded minimum temperature of -17.8 degrees Celsius, 9 degrees below the normal temperature for this time of season. Mercury in Shimla plunged to -3.8 degrees Celsius. Kalpa in Kinnaur shivered at -10.6 degrees Celsius while minimum temperature of Solan was dropped to -2 degrees Celsius. Dharmashala, Mandi and Bhunter recorded minimum temperatures of 2.1, 5.8 and 0.5 degrees Celsius respectively. Not only drinking water pipes frozen completely in the most of the parts of the state but brooks and sewer lines too has frozen completely. Reports from Keylong said the waters of Chenab river have frozen partially. Vehicles in Upper Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahaul and Manali had tough time driving on the slippery frosty roads. People had to pour hot water over the frozen pipes to get drinking water. Traffic was affected on Shimla-Kufri-Narkanda, Kharapatthar-Rohru and Shimla-Chopal routes due to heavy snowfall on Wednesday. In Manali, tourists could not move beyond Nehru Kund, 6km from here, due to dangerous associated with frosty road. Dozens of other roads have been blocked after snowfall. Following risks associated with driving on many frozen stretches of Manali-Leh highway, the movement of tourists along this route has almost stopped. It has hit the tourism industry in Manali. Less than a dozen cabs from Manali are plying Manali-Ladakh highway these days as driving on frozen road is dangerous. Most of tourists are preferring direct flights from Delhi to Leh which has left hundreds of taxi operators unemployed. Tourists while leaving for Ladakh, use Manali as their halt for one day and hire cab for their onward journey. October and November being off season in Manali, taxi operators are waiting for passengers. Now, most of the drivers have parked their cabs without passengers. With more than 1,700 cabs and 80 mini buses, the Him-Aanchal Taxi Operators Union in Manali is the largest in the state. Vice-president of the union Beas Dev said driving on Manali-Leh highway is dangerous both for driver and tourists. He adds, “Only some experienced drivers are daring to drive on frost. Most of the tourists are opting for airways. Now we are hoping for good business during Christmas weekend in December.” The temperature being below freezing point, three stretches between Darcha and Sarchu in Lahaul-Spiti including a stream at Bharatpur have frozen completely. The route may experience snowfall any time. And it would be blocked for traffic. To avoid dangers, travel agents are advising tourists to take alternate means of transport. High altitude lakes and water streams in Himachal Pradesh have started to freeze as temperature is dipping down drastically. The minimum temperature on hills higher than 13,000 feet has been below the freezing point. Situated at height of 16,000 feet, Suraj Tal lake at Sarchu and Chander Tal lake at a height of 14,100 feet in Spiti, have been freezing partially during night times. Most of the water bodies and streams on Baralacha-la have frozen completely. Dry atmosphere and low pressure have brought down the night temperature below freezing point here. According to meteorological department Shimla, temperature in the state is expected to decrease now onwards. Shimla meteorological department director Manmohan Singh said the temperature on high altitude regions was falling rapidly but low altitude areas of the state were still suffering from scorching heat. “District headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti at Keylong (11,000ft) is shivering at 7 degree Celsius, while Una is burning at 33 degree Celsius, 5 degrees more than usual temperature for this time of season,” he said. Kullu on Monday recorded minimum temperature of 16 degree Celsius, while it was 20.2 degree Celsius in Mandi. Keylong was the coldest at 7.1 degree Celsius followed by Kalpa (Kinnaur) at 8.5. Shimla, Dharamshala, Nahan, Una and Manali recorded minimum temperatures of 13.4, 14.1, 15.9, 20 and 10.2 degrees Celsius respectively. With maximum temperature of 33.2 degree Celsius, Una was the hottest region in state. Effect of cold is being witnessed in rivers, streams and other water sources whose water level has sharply decreased as melting speed of glaciers is decreased.
