Stranded in snow, Delhi, Rajasthan tourists rescued from Hamta January 27, 2021: Three tourists – two from Delhi and one from Rajasthan – who got lost in snow-covered jungle at Hamta above Manali on Tuesday night were rescued by the police with help of local volunteers. Police control room received an SOS call at 112 in the night time that some tourists have lost their way back to Manali in the snow-laden forests of Hamta. A team of two cops, two home guard jawans and a volunteer driver rushed to the expected location and started combing the area with help of three local residents. Kullu SP Gaurav Singh was quoted saying that the team searched for them at Sethan, Pandu Ropa, reservoir area and all possible locations for the whole night. “The search and rescue team successfully located them from about 2km below Sethan nullah in Hamta forest where they had stranded in the snow,” he said. The tourists were identified as Shahid, 32, Imran Khan, 22, both residents of Karol Bagh, New Delhi and Rehan, 12, resident of Rajasthan. “They were safely dropped at their hotel in Manali. We have been repeatedly requesting tourists not go to higher regions without hiring a local guide and return back on time. Getting stranded in bone chilling cold can be fatal,” he said. The parts of Himachal have received another spell of snow while the entire Lahaul valley has received heavy snowfall and the administration has ordered to close the schools for two days. With some areas receiving heavy snow and blankets of snow forming several layers, the Himachal disaster management authority has warned about avalanches in districts of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti. Both the district administrations have asked people to stay alert. While higher regions are receiving fresh snow, the lower areas are lashed by rain. Lahaul-Spiti district headquarter Keylong has received 60cm snow since Sunday evening. Koksar has received over 75cm snow. Solang, which was covered with nearly 75cm snow, has received 15cm more snow on Monday. Kalpa in Kinnaur also received 15cm more snow. Manali town received some traces of snow in the evening but snowfall had restarted in the late evening. The residents of Shimla city received some relief from slippery roads and pathways due to the rain but upper parts of the district received some snow. The conditions are worst in Lahaul valley where all roads are blocked and electricity and phone networks have been crippled by snow. The residents are hearing the roaring sound of the movement of snow avalanches but nobody can see them in almost no visibility. Keylong sub-divisional magistrate Amar Negi said the valley has experienced heavy snowfall since Sunday and schools have been closed for the next two days. “All roads are blocked and power supply is affected partially. The accumulation of blanket of snow on old hard snow has increased the chances of avalanches. We have alerted residents to take extra precaution,” he said. With incessant rain triggering landslides along Mandi-Manali national highway, Kullu administration has requested people to avoid driving during nighttime when its raining heavily. Another landslide at 16 Mile, 12km from Manali, had blocked the NH on Wednesday and Thursday. Four vehicles that were attempting to cross the stretch got stuck in boggy road on Wednesday and two vehicles stuck on Thursday morning. They remained stuck for hours until an excavator came for help. Although machines have been deployed here, landslides are blocking the road again and again. Sliding at Kalath, 15 Mile, Aluground and Rangari are posing threat to traffic. A dozen of vehicles have been hit by rolling boulders in recent days. This has affected the public transport on Kullu-Manali route as only a few buses are coming till Manali. Even some government buses are not coming till Manali, forcing people to travel in taxis. Manali-Rohtang road has also suffered severe damages due to landslides at many places. The whole mountain face is sliding down on the highway near Beas bailey bridge, making driving beyond Manali a nightmare. All low floor cars are colliding with the ground here. The entire Kullu district, especially Manali region, has received snow and rain for most of the days in both January and February. The earth has lost its water absorption capacity and has started to slide. Kullu deputy commissioner Yunus said the widening of the national highway is underway which is resulting in frequent landslides. “Driving becomes more risky in nighttime when slides and rolling boulders are not visible to the driver. Most of the highways and link roads have been blocked, flights have been canceled, hundreds of tourists are stranded on highways and many trekkers, shepherds have been feared trapped between snows in mountains. Rohtang pass has received more than one-foot snow and entire Lahaul-Spiti district has been covered with a thick blanket of snow. Manali-Leh highway has been blocked following heavy snowfall on Rohtang and Baralacha-la. Highway is damaged by landslides at many places. Hundreds of vehicles carrying tourists are reportedly stranded between Aut and Mandi after landslides on Chandigarh-Manali national highway No 21 since Saturday morning. In Thalout, flooded river Beas has engulfed about 15 meter stretch of highway. Meanwhile, dozens of trekkers and shepherds with thousands of sheep are feared trapped between blizzards on mountains. The exact figure could only be known after the snowfall would stop. Mandi deputy commissioner Devesh Kumar said heavy rain since past 24 hours has wreaked disaster in the district. “It’s raining hard here. A person is reported dead in Aut who attempted to reach near flooded river and a rock hit him. Some huts near Mandi temple have been washed away by river and landslides are blocking the highways repeatedly since Friday night,” he said. He added that police force, SDMs and all officials have been deployed to check the disasters caused by nature’s fury. Kullu deputy commissioner BM Nanta said Manali-Leh highway has been closed for the safety of people. He said, “Rohtang has been experiencing heavy snowfall. A woman is killed after a rock hit her in a remote village of Manikaran Valley.
