This tournament is being organized in Spiti in a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius. ADC Rahul Jain honored the chief guest of the program by giving him a thangka painting. The chief guest was also honored by the Ice Hockey Association of Lahaul Spiti and Royal Enfield. On this occasion, Vice President of Himachal Pradesh Forest Development Corporation, Kehar Singh Khachi, participated as the chief guest. Addressing the program, he said that the Chief Minister of the state Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu was to come on the occasion of the inauguration of this tournament. But due to the assembly session, he ordered him to join the event. He said that the geographical conditions of Spiti attract tourists round the year. The parts of Himachal on Friday were lashed by rain and hailstorms while high hills including Rohtang pass received fresh snow, bringing back winter-like conditions as mercury dipped sharply. Rohtang pass, which is covered with 20 to 30ft of snow, received 6cm more snow. The peaks around Manali, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba are getting more snow. The middle and lower hills of the state are receiving rain since Friday early morning. The temperature at many places has dipped abnormally. The minimum temperature of the state is 2 to 3 degrees C below and maximum temperature is 6 to 7 degrees C below the normal temperature during this time of the season. At 5.2 degrees C, Keylong recorded lowest night temperature in the state while the day temperature was 16 degrees C. Kalpa (6.9), Manali (7.6), Dalhousie (10.9), Shimla (12.2) and Dharamshala (16) also saw sharp fall in temperature. The maximum day temperature at these stations was 19, 19, 17.9, 22 and 23.8 degrees C respectively. The drop in both day and night temperatures have forced residents of Manali, Lahaul-Spiti, Bharmour, Kinnaur and higher regions of the state to wear heavy woollens. On Friday, people had to switch on their room heaters. According to meteorological centre, Shimla, the temperature in state has decreased by 2 to 7 degrees C in last 24 hours. MANALI: The hills of Himachal continued to receive more snow on Friday, third spell of snowfall in a week, triggering intensive cold wave conditions in the state. Keylong in Lahaul valley recorded minimum temperature of minus 14 degrees C, lowest of the season. The valley also witnessed multiple avalanches in last 24 hours. Hundreds of villages of the state are still disconnected by the snow. Besides road connectivity, snowfall has partially crippled power supply in many areas. With high velocity winds, some areas witnessed blizzards on Friday. Adding thickness to the existing snow, Solang and Kothi each received 30cm more snow. Dalhousie, Janjehli in Mandi and Kufri in Shimla each received 15cm more snow. Manali and Shimla received 15cm and 10cm more snow respectively. Keylong and Koksar in Lahaul received 10 and 15cm snow respectively. Manali-Rohtang pass highway is buried deep under thick layer of snow. Rohtang is expected to have received over 20ft of snow so far. The pass will open for vehicular movement in May month. More avalanches were reported from tribal Lahaul valley, and this time between Tandi and Koksar. Spells of snowfall are making multiple layers of snow and its thickness in higher areas has reached over 150cm. The unstable snow is falling in the form of avalanches. No untoward incident was reported. Over 300 roads are still blocked and hundreds of vehicles are stuck in snow. Large number of passengers of HRTC bus had a miraculous escape on Friday when bus slipped on snow at Kothi near Anni in Kullu. The driver managed to stop the bus at the edge of the gorge and passengers deboarded the bus. Jalori pass has received over 120cm of snow, blocking Kullu-Anni road. MANALI: Covered with thick blanket of snow, the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal is reeling under intense cold wave conditions with temperature plunging below minus 20 degrees C at some places. With frozen water sources, some places including Kaza and Keylong are facing water shortage. Temperature in Kibber, Komic, Hikkim, Demul and some higher villages in Spiti and Koksar in Lahaul has plunged below minus 20 degrees C. Spiti, where even hand pumps have frozen, residents are lighting fire around the pumps and taps in effort to get water from it. Keylong, where temperature is expected to dip below minus 15 degrees C in next few days recorded lowest temperature of minus 9 degrees C on Friday. Both minimum and maximum temperatures in state have increased by 3 to 4 degrees C in last few days but the temperature is expected by dip drastically by the end of the month. An official working with Rohtang tunnel project said mercury in Lahaul at north portal of the tunnel is dipping up to minus 25 degrees C in nighttime. “Many villages have no drinking water available. They are bringing water from the river. Thankfully, Keylong has some running taps,” a resident from Keylong Suneel Bodh said. He added that the district is getting less snow but has more cold this season. “We are spending time in skiing and indoor games. Manali-Rohtang-Leh highway has been blocked for traffic following heavy snowfall in mid and high hills of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts of Himachal and a fresh wave of cold has gripped the entire state on Thursday. Rohtang pass, 51km from here, is covered under 60cm of fresh snow while Baralacha pass in Lahaul valley has received more than 75cm fresh snow. Manali-Spiti road has also blocked after 45cm snowfall on Kunzum pass. Jalori pass on Kullu-Anni highway has also received some snow. Given the safety of the tourists, Manali police restricted movement of tourists to Kothi, 13km from here, till 12pm. Later when snowfall stopped, tourists were allowed to go till Gulaba, 19km from here. Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Beer Singh Thakur said vehicular traffic on Keylong-Leh highway has come to a complete halt after heavy snowfall. “The entire valley is getting intermittent snowfall. We are able to handle all type of situations arising due to heavy snowfall,” he said. While district headquarters Keylong received some overnight snow, Koksar, Darcha, Sissu, Telangbe and dozens of villages of valley are below more than 10cm thick blanket of snow. Bad weather condition has left many villages without electricity since Tuesday. Manali-Kothi highway remained jammed with traffic till noon after hundreds of tourist vehicles made a beeline on Manali-Rohtang highway. After ensuring safety of tourists, vehicles were allowed only upto lower Gulaba where 5cm fresh snowfall entertained them for the whole day.
