As elections are nearing, Border Roads Organization (BRO) has speeded up snow clearance operations along Manali-Rohtang-Keylong highway. Rohtang, which is still experiencing fresh snowfall, is expected to open for tourists by end of May or early June. Meanwhile, people have continued to cross Rohtang on-foot while local authorities are helping some people in traversing Rohtang tunnel. On Wednesday, nearly ten people had left Manali for Lahaul but they failed to withstand blizzards on Rohtang and had to return back to Manali. Rescue post at Marhi and Koksar have now alerted pedestrians not to go towards Rohtang pass which has received nearly 15cm of more snow on Wednesday. The temperature in Manali and Lahaul valley has sharply dipped after snowfall on hills and rain in the lower regions. People had to wear sweaters and jackets to protect them from cold. With target to resume traffic on Manali-Keylong highway before election, BRO jawans are working till late evening to clear snow from the highway. The machines have successfully cut through the snow and ice walls of Rahni nullah, the most difficult stretch of the road where snow depth was more than 40ft. Jawans from Manali side will clear road of snow till Rohtang within a week but it may take at least two more weeks for other BRO team to reach the pass from opposite side. BRO is still cutting 10 to 20ft deep snow and have reached nearly 1km beyond Rahni nullah. The weather has again turned inclement but BRO machines are unstoppable. BRO’s focus is on connecting Lahaul with Manali. Then organization shall concentrate on clearing snow from Darcha-Sarchu stretch. Be it through Rohtang tunnel or via Rohtang pass, residents of Lahaul who had migrated to Kullu or other places to spend winters have started to come back home before

Over hundred villages of snow-bound Lahaul valley have got freedom from snow-cage after four-month-long period on Wednesday late night when snow cutters from either side of Rohtang met at Kilometer-55 landmark beyond Rohtang top. Keylong in Lahaul has been linked to Manali by 115-km-long highway and some vehicles from Manali crossed Rohtang pass on Thursday morning. Despite facing bad weather conditions for most of the time, Border Roads Organization (BRO) has made record second time in a row for opening of the road on April 24. Last year the road was opened on the same day. Now thousands of people of Lahaul shall not have to depend on helicopter to go out of the valley in emergency situations. And now the movement of pedestrians would also stop on pass who are forced to put their lives in danger to reach their destinations. Although snow is cleared from the entire length of Manali-Keylong road, some stretches including Rohtang top, Rahni Nullah, are not safe for driving and BRO has requested people not to drive until road is declared safe for general traffic movement. “Road has been linked but it’s still risky for general movement. We are trying to make it safe for all types of vehicles,” BRO commander Colonel Yogesh Nair said. The work to clear snow from the highway was started on March 1 from Gulaba near Manali and BRO got success in its operation in 55 days. A dozen dozers and snow cutters were deployed to clear road from either side of Rohtang pass. While over 40 feet high snow was cut at Rahni Nullah, a constant thickness of 30 feet was seen after Rohtang towards Koksar in Lahaul. “Now putting all efforts for restoration of Manali-Leh road is our next operation,” said commander. Keylong-Leh road has been cleared

Border Roads Organization (BRO) has decided to keep strategically important Manali-Leh highway open till November 30 this year. Formerly the highway used to be closed officially after October 31 every year. In view of safety of travellers in winters when heavy snowfall blocks the major part of Manali-Leh highway, BRO declares this road unsuitable for vehicles. Once snow blocks highway after October 31, they are not liable to clear the snow. The organization this year has made arrangements to withstand snowfall to keep the road operational at any cost. Residents of Lahaul-Spiti shall get one extra month to stay connected with rest of the country before cutting off completely for next 5 months. BRO commander AK Dixit said organization owns heavy duty snow cutters which have capability to cut several feet snow at unbelievable speed, adding, “There are strong possibilities of good snowfall this year. Temperature at Rohtang pass is quite low. But we shall keep the highway out of snow till November 30 after which the road will be declared unsafe for human movement.”
