Heavy snowfall in parts of Kullu-Manali, Lahaul-Spiti and Mandi districts left traffic interrupted in many major roads while nearly 200 tourists stranded near Manali on Thursday. Hundreds of tourists had reached Gulaba and Kothi to see snowfall on Thursday morning. As it was snowing fast, tourists were asked to descend down to Kothi. Ignoring warning, many tourists stayed below Gulaba. Some tourists walked along the highway towards Gulaba. Later vehicles started slipping on the road and they got stranded. After getting news about tourists getting stranded, local administration, police and rescue volunteers rushed to Gulaba to carry out relief operation. All tourists were brought back to Manali by late evening. Manali sub-divisional magistrate Raman Gharsangi said tourists were not allowed to go beyond Gulaba on Thursday but some tourists were reported to have stranded below Gulaba. “The road had become very slippery. The tourists were brought to safe place with help of police, taxi union and other volunteers. Situation is under control,” he said. Solang valley and Kothi near Manali have experienced season’s first snowfall. Both places have received nearly 10cm of snow. Entire Lahaul valley is also covered with a thin layer of white blanket. Jalori pass in Kullu district that connects Anni and Nirmand sub-divisions with the headquarters has also witnessed season’s first snowfall, blocking the highway. Manali-Rohtang-Keylong highway has again closed after heavy snowfall. Rohtang pass has received over 60cm of fresh snow. Over 75cm of snow on Baralacha pass has blocked Keylong-Sarchu road as well. Heavy snowfall on Kunzum pass has blocked Gramphoo-Kaza road. The high hills of Mandi district including Shikari hills have also received snow. MANALI: The peaks of Himachal, most parts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts, Dalhousie and Manali have worn fresh mantle of snow while many lower parts of the state received moderate rain on Saturday. The weatherman has predicted more snowfall in next 24 hours. Keylong, district headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti, received 30cm of snow. Gondla and Koksar recorded 11cm and 20cm snowfall respectively. Dalhousie in Chamba district received 15cm and Kalpa and Pooh in Kinnaur district received 4cm and 8cm of snow respectively. Manali received 10cm and Solang received over 30cm of snow. Rohtang pass, which is inaccessible in winter months, has received more than 60cm of snow in last 48 hours. The snow is wet and accumulation rate is very low due to absence of extreme cold. Most places received rain coupled with snowflakes. While it was snowing on the peaks since night, people in Manali were surprised to see only rain till 10am. The average minimum temperature of state has increased by 3 to 4 degrees C in last 24 hours. The minimum temperature in Manali was recorded at 1 degree C. Despite weather alert and warnings, there was no rain or snowfall in Shimla where minimum temperature plunged only to 3.7 degrees C. Clouds were hovering over the hill queen and residents kept waiting or snowfall but only to be disappointed. At minus 7 degrees C, Keylong was the coldest place in Himachal. Entire Lahaul valley is receiving heavy snowfall and vehicular traffic in district has come to the standstill. Many parts of Lahaul valley have no internet connectivity. Snowfall has blocked many roads in Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and Chamba districts. SHIMLA: Both minimum and maximum temperatures across the state dipped by 1 to 2 degrees as high hills of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti received light snowfall. More snow is forecast from Saturday by local meteorological department. Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti district was the coldest in the state at -7.1 degrees Celsius where maximum temperature in last 24 hours was only 6.7 degrees Celsius. Kalpa in Kinnuar recorded minimum temperature of -5 degrees Celsius, followed by Manali (-2.6), Dalhousie at (1.2), Shimla (2.1) and Dharamshala (6.6). Night temperature in areas above 12,000 feet has plunged below -15 degrees Celsius. According to Shimla meteorological office, a fresh wave of western disturbance will be active in the state from Saturday which will bring snowfall on high hills and rain in mid and low hills. “Day and night temperatures in Himachal have decreased by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in last 24 hours,” met director Manmohan Singh said. Manali had a coldest night of the season at -2.6 degrees Celsius where maximum day temperature was recorded at 11 degrees Celsius. The fresh overnight snowfall on Rohtang pass has thrilled the tourists who thronged here Friday morning.
