The Indian Army team has won the trophy of 14th National Rafting Championships held at Sunni in Shimla district and another team of the Army won second place while the team of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) remained third overall winner of the tournament. The event had started on March 23 in Satluj river and a total of 15 national teams participated in the races in different categories including men and women. Five team of Indian Army, four teams of Border Security Force (BSF), teams from Punjab police, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Arunachal and Himachal participated in the event. The ABVIMAS team bagged gold in sprint race in senior men category while Army teams won both silver and bronze. In both slalom and marathon races, the gold, silver and bronze were won by the three teams of Army. In senior boys and girls mix category, gold was won by ABVIMAS, silver and bronze were bagged by BSF teams. Gold in marathon race was bagged by BSF, silver by ABVIMAS team and bronze by BSF. Indian Army team was declared the overall winner. Another team of Indian Army was declared first runner up and ABVIMAS team had to satisfy with third place. The event was hosted by ABVIMAS in association with Himachal Tourism. While hoteliers in Himachal are getting training on resumption of the operations amid Covid-19 pandemic, the state government is also introducing some new extreme water sports in Himachal to woo the tourists. As soon as ban on tourist movement is lifted, tourists will get to experience jetovator, hydrofoil and jet skiing at Tatapani and Larji reservoirs of Himachal. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali, will train local youths from Tatapani and Larji areas next month. The trained youth will then operate the activities for tourists in their respective areas. The machines and related equipment which are not available in Indian market have been imported from the foreign nations. ABVIMAS director Col Neeraj Rana said, “The courses for jetovator, hydrofoil and jet ski will start from July 7 at Pong Dam. The machines and required equipment have reached Himachal. Once the tourist inflow is allowed, these activities will be available immediately. In an effort to make Himachal an international hub of adventure sports, more and more new activities will be introduced in the future,” he said. White water river rafting is the main adventurous water sport available in Himachal. Lakhs of tourists experience this activity every year. Jetovator, a flying water-powered bike and hydrofoil, a technology that facilitates in sailing like an aircraft, are new introduction to the water sports in Himachal. Made for speed, jet ski is also expected to woo the adventure enthusiasts. Himachal has over a hundred small and large manmade reservoirs. Himachal government is planning to introduce water sports in many of them which will not only boost tourism but provide employment to local residents. A five-member rafting team from India is participating in Senior World Rafting Championships at Tunceli city of Turkey. This is the first time that the Indian team is participating in the world rafting championship. Four athletes and a coach-cum-reserve player from Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali, are representing the country in the championships being organized by World Rafting Federation (WRF) and Turkish Rafting Federation (TRF). The event is being organized in the Munzur river from June 8 to 13. The Indian team reached Tunceli on Sunday morning and did some practice runs to warm up. The opening ceremony was held on Sunday evening and competition will start from Monday. Gimnar Singh, Naveen Kumar, Akshat Kumar and Panne Lal are the athletes while ABVIMAS director Colonel Neeraj Rana is the coach and reserve athlete. The competitions will consist of downriver, 600m sprint, 1.2km slalom and cross country. Over 20 countries are participating in the championships. Col Neeraj Rana said they got an invitation from Turkish Rafting Federation based on their performances in national games. “ABVIMAS team had won first prize in national rafting championship in Satluj river last year. This is the first time that our country is taking part in the world rafting championship. After some warm-up runs, we are sure about good performance,” he said. Tunceli is the home to 36-km-long Munzur river. The city which had hosted Turkey Rafting Championship in May last year is hosting world championship for the first time. TRF has spent a huge amount on the improvement of the infrastructure in the city and has developed two courses – one for training and warm up and other for main races.

River rafting, river crossing, canoeing and all the water sports have been banned in Kullu. Given the rising water level in Beas, Parbati and other water streams of the district, administration has taken this decision for the safety of tourists. River Beas, Parbati and their tributaries are in spate and following heavy rains on hills and valleys of the state. Also, the speed of melting of snow has doubled due to rise in temperature. Rivers, which are flowing above the normal water level, are posing threat to the tourists who are thronging river banks for various water sports. “All water sports including white water river rafting and river crossing have been banned for the security of the tourists. The ban would continue to be imposed until water comes down to safe level,” district tourism development officer Minu Ram Dhiman told Discover Kullu Manali. He added that if somebody is found organizing any of the water sports, strict action would be taken against him. Generally administration imposes ban on water sports and paragliding between July 15 and August 15 in rainy season when water streams and rivers come under flood. This time the heavy rain that is continuing since last 72 hours has created monsoon like situations. And administration had to take this hard decision in peak summer tourist season. Over five thousand tourists were enjoying river rafting everyday at Pirdi and Babeli near Kullu. Not only the ban has disappointed thousands of tourists but also hit the employment of hundreds of youths here who were doing brisk business these days. Sources say a large number of tourists visit Kullu-Manali only for adventure sports like river rafting, paragliding, rock climbing, trekking and skiing.
