Work is on to restore the Manali-Rohtang-Leh highway, which was blocked following heavy snowfall in winter months. Snow has been removed from the highway up to Marhi, 32km from Manali. Tourists are being allowed to visit Gulaba (23km) only. But 5 to 8 feet snow is enough to make them cheer. According to Border Roads Organization (BRO) officials, tourists would be able to reach Marhi after April 15, while they are sure to open Rohtang Pass by third week of April, but tourists can visit Rohtang only after the last week of May. The snow clearance teams would then move to Baralacha-La to restore Manali-Leh highway. The highway is likely to open till first week of May.
As the road clearing teams of BRO are facing traffic congenstions while working on the site, tourist vehicles are only allowed to visit the nearest snow point where they can find abundance of snow.
