Snow Marathon Lahaul is being organised in India for the first time ever with participation of nearly 100 runners from across the nation who will be running on snow covered terrains of Himachal’s Lahaul valley on March 26. The event is being organised in association of Lahaul-Spiti administration, Reach India and a group of adventure sports enthusiasts from different parts of the country. Runners from other countries are not participating this season due to travel restrictions. Besides Indian armed forces, marathoners from many states are taking part in the Snow Marathon Lahaul. As Lahaul-Spiti administration has announced to make it an annual event that will be held every year in winter season, runners from other nations will also be allowed from next year onwards. Lahaul has been chosen for this extreme winter sports event as the valley remains covered with snow for most time of the year. Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Neeraj Kumar chaired a meeting at Solang valley to discuss the event on Saturday. Chief event advisor Col Arun Natrajan, event founder Gaurav Schimar, event execution head Rajesh Chand, Army’s Palchan transit camp commanding officer and seasoned marathon runner Col Santosh Barmola briefed in detail about the Snow Marathon Lahaul which is expected to change the definition of extreme marathon in the country. Rajesh Chand said the snow marathon will be organised in five categories – full marathon (42km), half marathon (21km), 10km, 5km and 1km (joy race). “The marathon is being organised under the leadership of Winter Sports Federation of India president Col Jodh Dhillon. Don’t try to go beyond Darcha: Police warns tourists Updated on March 09, 2022 As some tourists are trying to go towards avalanche-prone high altitude areas with deep snow, Lahaul-Spiti police have asked them not to take risks and enjoy snow in the lower areas of the district. Police have advised tourists that the road is open upto Darcha but it is completely blocked beyond it. Police warned that if any tourist will forcibly go beyond Darcha, he may have to face strict legal action. Police said the offenders will be liable for punishment with imprisonment or a compounding fee of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 under section 115 of HP Police Act. Stranded for four days, 100 tourists with 23 vehicles rescued from Lahaul Updated on January 7, 2022 A large number of tourists who had been stranded at Sissu and other parts in Lahaul valley after snowfall on Tuesday have been rescued by the cops along with their 23 vehicles on Friday. Nearly 100 tourists, who were staying in Lahaul, were being rescued on Tuesday but had to return back to Sissu from Atal tunnel as south portal of the tunnel towards Manali had received very heavy snow. The road was completely blocked. The tourists were staying in hotels in Sissu, 6km from northern portal of the tunnel. As the weather had cleared up for some time on Friday morning and Border Roads Organisation had cleared snow from the highway, cops from Lahaul and Manali evacuated all the vehicles safely. A woman with a travel history of Canada has been tested positive for the new Omicron variant of Covid-19. The 45-year-old woman from Mandi district of Himachal, whose samples were sent to Delhi for whole-genome sequencing to confirm Omicron on December 18, was tested negative for Covid-19 on December 24 while her sample for Omicron was found positive on December 26. This lone case is expected to have no impact on tourism as the woman is in home isolation and her three contacts have also been found to be negative. The woman and her three primary contacts are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. 24 December 2021: Thousands of tourists have thronged Manali.
