The parts of Himachal on Friday were lashed by rain and hailstorms while high hills including Rohtang pass received fresh snow, bringing back winter-like conditions as mercury dipped sharply. Rohtang pass, which is covered with 20 to 30ft of snow, received 6cm more snow. The peaks around Manali, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba are getting more snow. The middle and lower hills of the state are receiving rain since Friday early morning. The temperature at many places has dipped abnormally. The minimum temperature of the state is 2 to 3 degrees C below and maximum temperature is 6 to 7 degrees C below the normal temperature during this time of the season. At 5.2 degrees C, Keylong recorded lowest night temperature in the state while the day temperature was 16 degrees C. Kalpa (6.9), Manali (7.6), Dalhousie (10.9), Shimla (12.2) and Dharamshala (16) also saw sharp fall in temperature. The maximum day temperature at these stations was 19, 19, 17.9, 22 and 23.8 degrees C respectively. The drop in both day and night temperatures have forced residents of Manali, Lahaul-Spiti, Bharmour, Kinnaur and higher regions of the state to wear heavy woollens. On Friday, people had to switch on their room heaters. According to meteorological centre, Shimla, the temperature in state has decreased by 2 to 7 degrees C in last 24 hours. The centre has predicted more rain till Sunday.

MANALI: Aimed to spread message of environment protection, Kullu administration will organize “Beas Maha Arti” in presence of 121 priests, 200 folk musicians and thousands of other people on January 1. The event will be held at Nature Park in Mohal village of Kullu and chief minister Jai Ram Thakur would be present at the occasion. This will also be an attraction for tourists visiting Kullu-Manali. The ceremony, first of its kind in Himachal, is being organized by district administration with help of Devi Devta Pujari Sangh, Kardar Sangh, Bajantri Sangh and many other organizations and departments of Kullu. The administration has invited all the people of state to witness this occasion on the first day of 2019. The purpose of puja of holy Beas river is to spread message of protection of rivers and environment from pollution. Kullu deputy commissioner Yunus on Thursday hold a meeting with representatives of different organizations and government departments to review the preparations for the maha arti. “All arrangements are being made by the bank of Beas river at Mohal. The maha arti will start in the evening at about 5pm. 121 Brahmins, more than 200 folk musicians, kardars (caretakers of temples) and thousands of people will take part in the auspicious occasion,” he said. The DC said use of plastic, polythene or things made of non-biodegradable products would be strictly prohibited. “Diyas of clay or flour and plates of leaves would be used for arti and would be made available on the spot. Interested people can bring diyas with them too. Police, home guards and officials of transport department have been directed to ensure law and order, traffic management, parking facility and disaster management,” he added.

The entire country celebrated Dussehra after burning effigies of Ravana and his brothers on October 6, but Kullu on Wednesday celebrated unique Dussehra after burning shrubs and grass to denote burning of Lanka. The seven-day-long Dussehra festivities of Kullu concluded with burning of Lanka. Accompanied by 226 deities, chariot of lord Raghunath ji was pulled up to Lanka Bekar near river Beas in Kullu. The non-invited guest of Dussehra, Balu Nag, was not allowed to take part in the ceremony. As per the tradition, palanquins of all deities stopped at a certain distance while Goddess Hadimba continued its journey to play final rituals. Heaps of grass and shrubs were burnt here as a symbol of Lanka Dahan (burning of Lanka), victory of good over evil. Priest of Goddess Hadimba, Rohit Ram Sharma, said Hadimba is considered grandmother of royal family of Kullu and she starts and ends the Dussehra festivity. “All other deities cannot come to execute final ceremony of Lanka Dahan. They only watch the things happening from a certain distance. The tradition is centuries old,” he said. Lakhs of devotees were shoting ‘Jai Shri Ram, Jai Raghunath’ while pulling the chariot. Entire valley was echoing with heavenly sound of drums and trumpets. After burning the Lanka, palanquins and idols of deities embraced each other, paid final obeisance to Lord Raghunath ji (Rama), and left for their respective shrines. They started their two to three day-long on foot journey to back home. All deities would congregate here again during Dussehra festivity next year. Meanwhile, the international cultural programmes in Kullu were concluded by state chief minister PK Dhumal. However, the Dussehra shopping would continue till Diwali festival.
